Nigerians, particularly those who live in rural communities, have been advised to be security conscious in view of the current security challenges in the country.
This was the submission of experts at a security seminar organised by Junior Chamber International (JCI), Abeokuta in conjunction with Rotary Club of Abeokuta Hills, held at Oke-Ata area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
The theme of the seminar is “Collaborative Efforts in Security Sustainability; The Role of Individual and Community.”
Ogun State Command Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi who was represented by ASP Oluwole Folashade, said urged residents to be vigilant and to provide security agencies with credible information about strange activities in their community.
Oyeyemi stressed that such information is necessary for security operatives in their commitment to safeguarding lives and properties.
He said: “Good relationship must exist between the security personnel and community members for adequate cooperation in security sustainability. The need to know our neighbours is also part of measures in community policing so as to know when there is a threat.
“Police alone cannot do it, you must support the security operatives for better security. Sharing of information and financial commitment among all neighbouring Community Development Associations (CDAs) in their various boundaries is very vital their security and development.”
Oyeyemi added that: “As community members, we need to make ourselves available and ready to serve at all time for the benefit of the community. We must also look into the constitutional review of each CDAs to suit the adequate measure in security sustainability.”
President of JCI Abeokuta, Fatoyinbo Omolade, who spoke earlier said “the Sustainable Development Goal 11 which tends to promote sustainable cities and communities also advances JCI vision which is to connect both the security personnel as well as the community members together in the bid to develop a strategy for a secure environment.”
He disclosed that JCI’s Police and You Project is focused on peace, prosperity and sustainability, adding that the project must serve as a bedrock between all parties involved in community policing.
Other stakeholders at the event include Ogun State Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Dr Samson Popoola; South-West PCRC PRO, Comrade Kunle Sodipo; So Safe Corps operatives; 50th President JCI Nigeria, Amb. Abiola Olorunnisola and Rotary Club of Abeokuta Hills Chapter President, Rtn. Ogunwoolu Adegoke.
