A distraught family of the 20-year old Ekene Umejiego has raised alarm over his death, alleging that he died under controversial circumstances.
Umejiego family members are asking the authority to interrogate their suspicion that the deceased’s guardian, Jeffery Agbroko Oghenemine, in Warri, Delta State, knew more about the circumstances under which Umejiego died and wanted the police to investigate the circumstances of the death.
In two separate petitions addressed to the Zone 5 Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police in Benin City from the chambers of Olayiwola Afolabi and K.O.Obamogie both in Benin City Edo on behalf of Chika Solomon an uncle to the deceased, the family asked the zone to take over the investigation from the Delta State Police Command so that justice would be served in the matter and the suspected killer of their son would be exposed.
The petition alleged that the guardian of Ekene visited his mother in Benin City on the 16th of June in the company of an armed soldier and his lawyer to inform her of the death of his son, saying that the deceased was found in front of their estate gate claiming to have been shot by unknown gunmen and that he died before he was rushed to the hospital.
It was further claimed that rather than talking about finding the killers, the guardian only told Ekene’s mother that he would take care of her.
“This made our client and his sister, Ekene’s mother to travel to Warri that same day and visited the mortuary where Ekene’s body was deposited. When they got to the mortuary, upon examination of the deceased body, our client discovered that the body has no gunshot wound, but was rather full of bruises, a broken arm and clothes tied around his neck to support the broken arm,” the petition stated.
The petition further alleged that the statement Ekene’s guardian and his worker wrote at Ekpan police station in Delta state were conflicting and that the deceased mother and his uncle had been receiving calls that they should stop searching for the killer of their ward because they would never find the person.
The AIG Zone 5 acknowledged that it had received the petitions and would be assigned to the appropriate department for investigation.
