Obiano celebrates World Youth Skill Day

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State, on Thursday, joined the rest of the world to celebrate the World Youth Skill Day.

During the celebration, the governor who was represented at the event, which took place at King David Hotel, Awka, by the State Commissioner for Youth Empowerment and Creative Economy,  Prof Theresa Obiekezie, presented Trade Test certificates to 509 graduands from the various skill acquisition programmes for youths in the State.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the beneficiaries were trained in computer craft work, hair dressing, cosmetology, block laying and concrete work, painting work, GSM repairs, totel and catering management, photography, leather works,tiling and POP ceiling.

Presenting the certificates to the skill acquisition graduands, Professor Obiekezie said Grades  two and three certificates of proficiency were issued to enable them practise  what they learnt.

She added that Grade one Trade Test certificate would be issued to those who must have started training others in their various fields of specialization.

While explaining the uniqueness of the certificates from the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity,  she said if given the desired skills,youths of the state had the potential of being at par with China,Japan and other developing nations.

The commissioner called on good spirited individuals and companies to assist government in its continuous training and retraining of youths for their economic sustainability.

“These certificates will enable the trained youths gain employment both in private companies and government offices around the world. As you collect your certificates, be sure to continue to practice the skills for which you were trained.

“Let me also assure you of government’s continuous commitment to providing suitable atmosphere for youths to maximize their potentials of self actualization and self employment,” Obiekezie said

While describing youths of the state as enterprising, she observed that the theme for this year’s celebration, “Reimagining Youth Skills,  Post Pandemic” aimed at extolling the resilience and creativity of youth throughout the COVID-19 crisis.

Resource persons who spoke on the theme for this year’s  celebration included Dr Ik Ume, Managing Director, Pacent Technologies and Dr Azubuike Aniedu,  Head  of information Communication Technology (ICT), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

They urged the skill acquisition graduands to explore new ways of doing business, take ownership of their businesses, build linkages and partnerships to excel in a largely competitive environment.

Some of the  graduands including Ifunanya Okeke, Mmesoma Obichukwu and Micheal Ekwezo, appreciated the state government for its youth friendly policies and programmes, pledging to use the certificate to add more value to the society.
