A day-old girl who was said to have been abandoned by her yet-to-be-identified mother has been rescued by a good Samaritan at a roadside along Kuta Road, opposite the Central Mosque in Minna, the Niger State capital.
The baby was brought before the state’s Child Rights Protection Agency on Tuesday.
The Good Samaritan, Hajiya Fatima Adamu, said that the baby, who was wrapped with a cloth, was discovered by passers-by and she was alerted to the development by her neighbours.
Hajiya Adamu said: “When I got to the scene, I saw people gathered there. I was informed that an unknown woman alighted from a motorcycle and dumped the baby, before escaping from the scene.
“When I got to the scene, everybody was afraid to touch the baby, a girl, but I and a vigilante group member took the baby and went to the Central Police Station where we went to inform the police.
“The police officer on duty took the baby and promised to bring the matter before the Child Rights Agency, which focuses on children and women.”
A female police officer, who was on duty when the case was reported, Mrs Hassana Usman, confirmed the incident.
The director-general of the Child Rights Agency, Mrs Mariam Kolo, however, appealed to members of the public to assist the agency with useful information on the identity of the mother of the abandoned baby.
“We are calling on anyone, especially those living around the area, who knows any woman who was pregnant and recently delivered in the last three days and hasn’t been seen with a baby to report to our agency.
“This is to enable us to identify the mother and bring her to justice, “ she said.
Kolo said that the agency would work with the state police command and the Ministry of Women Affairs to investigate the matter, while she commended the Good Samaritan for saving the life of the baby.
