Nigeria’s lenient foreign policy is always abused. The recent demolition of Nigeria’s Embassy House in Ghana and brutalisation of some Nigerians resident in Ghana are a slap on Nigeria’s foreign policy that tends towards friendly relations to other foreign countries.
This has given many countries undue advantage in treating Nigerian citizens in their countries badly knowing that stringent measures are not going to be taken against them by the Nigeria government.
Cases of brutality against Nigerians abound as exemplified in the assault and killing of Nigerians in South African. Though the Ghanaian government has shown interest in investigating this particular case, the Nigeria High Commissioner should monitor the investigation and make sure the culprits are brought to book to serve as a deterrent to others.
The Federal Government should review our foreign policy by making it symbiotic in nature such that it is based on equal interests and benefits. This will go a long way in saving our citizens abroad from unnecessary embarrassments and unwarranted brutality
Nigerians deserve better treatment outside the country. Not every Nigerian in a foreign country is a criminal. There are many Nigerians that are gainfully employed and others who engage in legal businesses thereby contributing to national domestic products of their country of residence.
The belief that all Nigerians in foreign countries are criminals is illogical, unfair and should be stopped. The government should do something about this as our international image is at risk and the lives of Nigerians in jeopardy.
