BREAKING:US govt condemns FG for suspending Twitter

The United States government has condemned the suspension of Twitter by Buhari led administration in Nigeria, adding that it undermines Nigerians’ ability to exercise their fundamental freedom and also sends a bad message to its citizens, investors and businesses.

Elombahnews had reported on Friday that the Nigerian Government, through the Minister of Information and Communication, Alhaji Lai Mohammad announced the suspension of Twitter from operating in the country.

The suspension was indefinite as the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said that Nigerians were using Twitter to orchestrate activities that are injurious to the corporate existence of Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the US government in statement said, banning social media and restricting every citizen’s ability to seek, receive, and impart information undermines fundamental freedoms.

It also reaffirmed that President Joe Biden is committed to individual expression, open public conversation, and accountability.

The statement read in part, “Nigeria’s constitution provides for freedom of expression. The government’s recent #Twitterban undermines Nigerians’ ability to exercise this fundamental freedom and sends a poor message to its citizens, investors and businesses.

“Banning social media and curbing every citizen’s ability to seek, receive, and impart information undermines fundamental freedoms.

“As President Biden has stated, our need for individual expression, open public conversation, and accountability has never been greater.

“The path to a more secure Nigeria lies in more, not less communication, alongside concerted efforts toward unity, peace, and prosperity.”
