Again Boko Haram elements on Thursday just before midday mounted another roadblock around Auno community, 24 km from Maiduguri killing a police superintendent in the process and abducting several other persons.
Meanwhile, some of the civilians believed to have been abducted include: MB Zarma, Mohammed Hassan, Mohammed Sabo Usman, Mohammed Abba Kaka, Ahmed Abubakar and Ali Bintumi
Others include, Ibrahim Isjikau, Bana Kyar, Modu Kura Abba Aji, Musa Yawali,. Husseini Mohammed, Abubakar Bukar. Mohammed Muktar, Hammed Modu
Adam Babagana, Shetima Dauda.
The illegal checkpoint actually caused many commuters to drive in innocently and were quickly dragged by the heavily armed insurgents into the Savannah.
An impeccable source within the state Rapid Response Squad (RRS) mandated to police the Trunk A road told metrowatchonline.com that the insurgents have turned Auno to a regular attack point because each time they are on the road or approaching our people they put on military fatigues making it very difficult for the RRS team to quickly differentiate between the enemy and the Nigerian Army.
“The uniform disguise is our big problem now and it is giving us a tough time to make situational differences so as not to fire at our partners the soldiers if they are the ones approaching. These people change Camouflags at will and sometimes they come too close before we are certain they are not our people”, said our source.
He said that the superintendent of police, (name withheld) was badly wounded in the cause of defending himself such that after firing on him, the insurgents came close and burnt him in the gun truck he used to fight back.
He regretted the death of the officer whom he said fought tooth and nail to break the road assault on Auno but lost his life in the process.
When Re-enforcement came.
Just after midday, word reached the airforce component base that the insurgents had taken over the Maiduguri Damaturu road and they were abducting commuters for the umpteenth time on the same spot.
This went on for some time until reinforcements were sent after the insurgents who were pursued into the bush by military gun trucks backed by air surveillance.
” I was walking nearby the component command base when I heard the loud alarm sounded by the airforce indicating a call to be at alert because there was danger lurking close by.
“It actually started sounding after eleven o clock and it went on for a long time until several trucks of troops had been dispatched to the location of the abduction.
“We were told that the terrorists were operating freely around the Auno Jakana axis of the road which is located in the Konduga council area of the road.” Said another eyewitness.
Our military source further confirmed that the Boko Haram insurgents mounted informal checkpoints along the road well-kitted like the military abducting several travellers and that they routed into the Savannah men women and children and their spoils.
Eyewitnesses said that several people were taken before reinforcements came chasing them into the Savannah and forcing them to release some of the women whose figure cannot be ascertained until first light on Friday.
But when contacted, our military source confirmed that indeed people were abducted on Thursday but said only two who had the opportunity to escape had done so and were lurking in the dark for first light to head for Maiduguri.
“The two people abducted by Boko Haram terrorists were released as of this evening. They are currently around Auno waiting in the dark in one of the safe points.
“They are afraid to approach further because of soldiers whom they know would be on red alert. This is because accidents can happen due to uncertainties under the influence of darkness.” said our military source yesterday night.
Again, there was a heavy fracas between the insurgents and the military in Jakana in the pitch darkness towards midnight as at yesterday.
Although our military source denied knowledge of any night rumble in the savannah, the RRS personnel who craved anonymity said they were waiting for first light to ascertain the status of Jakana another linear settlement along the Damaturu Maiduguri road which is also one of the regular assault points of both Boko Haram and ISWAP.
Mainock, Jakana and Ngamdu have always been their regular checkpoints because intelligence reports had revealed that some of their loved ones live within until recently that Auno has become part of their hostage abduction and recruitment zone and a sore point to the managers of the insurgent war in the state.
