Egg-heads in the academia across the continent of Africa are brainstorming on the way possible to harmonise the functions of universities in Africa.
Gathered under the auspices of 11th International Conference and Workshop on Quality Assurance in Higher Education in Africa, the conference, overseen by Professors Peter Okebukoa and Ayo Banjo, has brough professors, vice-chancellors, among others to propagate ideals of the African university system.
With the theme: “Towards Sustainable of Continental Agenda of Higher Education in Africa”, the conference , which licked-start yesterday is deliberating on the need for exchamge of students, yteachers and serfices to harmonise university education in Africa.
Speaking at the opening of the conference, the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abubakar Rasheed, said universities should intensify efforts at teaching non-speaking African student common language.
He advised that quality assurance initiative remains the only medium of promoting harmony in institutions.
He also advocated for improvement in collaboration among African universities.
Rasheed disclosed that until now, the Commission had been holding series of meetings with the Nigerian Economic Summit Group on how university students could be trained to become entrepreneurs, rather than depending on white collar jobs.
“To this effect, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), he said, would soon be signed.
“We would have done that before now, but we are now ready to do that”, he said.
The NUC scribe stressed the need for African countries to improve in the use of various languages rather than depending on interpreters during conferences and other engagements.
He advocated that sabbaticals should be extended to six months for university lecturers, assuring that this would enable those going for them to have more experience than what is obtained now.
He advised university managers to move towards integration of language teaching in their various system, projecting that the National Universities Commission might not be pro-active in its mandates again in 20 years time.
