The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) on Saturday commended Enugu State Government for distributing palliatives to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the 17 Local Government Areas.
The Executive Director of the NGO, Mr David Anyaele gave the commendation in a statement issued in Enugu.
According to him, the gesture is a welcome development considering the economic hardship PWDs in the state are facing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Anyaele, however, called for inclusion, participation and sustainability of the gesture by the Enugu State Government toward PWDs and issues affecting them.
“This inclusion, participation and sustainability will be achieved when the state government collaborates with the House of Assembly, to as matter of priority activate measures for the adoption of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018.
” Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) should close ranks and work together to ensure successful distribution of the palliatives as one good turn deserves another,’’ he said.
Anyaele said that the NGO was encouraging the disability community, PWDs Local Governments Area Chairmen to take appropriate measures to ensure no PWD in their council area was left behind in the palliatives distribution.
NAN recalls that CCD had conducted a survey in five states of the Federation, including Enugu State in order to have an insight to how PWDs could benefit from distribution of the COVID-19 palliatives.
Anyaele said that the survey was part of the activities for the implementation of our project on Strengthening Citizens Resistance to the Prevalence of Corruption (SCRAP-C).
He said the project was being implemented in five states, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Kaduna, Kano and Lagos.
According to him, the implementation is being done in partnership with Action Aid and funding from the United Kingdom Department for International Development (UK-DfID).
