As part of measures to mitigate the effect of climate change in the state, governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has flagged off the 2020 tree planting campaign at the Sultan Abubakar 111 Juma’at Mosque within the metropolis.
Speaking at the launch, Tambuwal who solicited for a collective commitment from all stakeholders towards safeguarding the environment, added that, benefits to be derived from tree planting are enormous.
According to him, trees improves air, soil and water qualities, protects environment, and also gives both economic and health benefits, hence the advise against indiscriminate felling of tress.
Tambuwal who divulged that they will be establishing afforestation clubs in schools across the state further admonished all the 23 local government councils to key into the tree planting initiative.
He also appealed to the people of the state to continue taking preventive measures against the COVID 19, as according to him, a zero case in Sokoto for some times now does not mean it’s all over.
On his part, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Abubakar Sa’ad 111 tasked leaders of all class to protect our environment by planting trees.
The state commissioner of environment, Hon Sagir Attahiru Bafarawa noted that the quest for green economy can only be attained by sustained tree planting to curb the effect of climate change.
