Southern Kaduna is flowing with blood and ithe situation is getting out of hand. In less than three months, there are reports over 200 people have been killed.
In mid July, at least 11 people were reportedly killed by gunmen in an attack in Gora Gan village of Zango Kataf local government area of Kaduna State. The attack came barely 24 hours after 21 people were said to have been killed by bandits at Kukum Daji village in neighbouring Kaura local government area.
Again, 24 people were killed by bandits in what seemed like coordinated attacks in three communities of Zango Kataf local government area.
Earlier in March this year, gunmen reportedly killed 11 people in Kaduna despite the curfew imposed on the state to curb the spread of COVID-19. In a statement, Luka Binniyat, spokesman of the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU), said the killings took place in Guruku ward, Kuduru village in Chikun local government area and Jagindi in Jema’a local government area.
Similarly, over 30 people were said to have been killed since May 12, 2020, when gunmen, believed to be herdsmen, invaded some villages in Kajuru LGA of the state.
It appears that the security agents are powerless to stop the killings in Southern Kaduna. A man even narrated how the killer herdsmen sent letters, saying they will attack after the Sallah festivities. Such an impudence!
Senseless killings without the perpetrators being punished would encourage more killings. It would also encourage tribes to start forming ethnic militias to defend themselves. No one will sit down and watch his people being killed everyday. Southern Kaduna is gradually turned into a Hobbesian nature where life is short and brutish. Something has to give. Traditional and religious leaders have a major role to play in dousing tension. The security agents should be alive to their responsibility, criminals can’t be killing innocent Nigerians when there is supposed to be curfew in place. Where are the security agents who are supposed to be enforcing the curfew? Until people begin to get punished severely, these senseless killings will continue.
