Not many people know him as Akaelu Steven Ebuka, but mention the name Steve Chuks or Steven Chuks and you will see people’s faces lit up with recognition, followed by a burst of laughter as they remember the popular comedian called Mama Gold or Cleopatra, the alter egos made popular by the 23-year-old in his comedy skits that are everywhere on social media.
Akaelu, an indigene of Anambra State who graduated from the University of Lagos with a Bachelor degree in Theatre Arts is one of the notable new age comedians setting social media ablaze with rib-cracking videos.
Unlike some of his peers, Steve Chuks didn’t gatecrash showbiz; rather, he has a credential as an actor, content creator and vlogger.
“I started creating contents back in 2013 before I had a stint in the movie industry in 2014. Then I took a break to study, before returning fully to entertainment in 2017,” he explains.
And since then, his stock has risen astronomically. He has become an internet celebrity, especially on YouTube and Instagram where his videos are the rave.
In an age that has produced a herd of overnight celebrities, Steve Chuks consciously tries to distinguish himself. According to him: “My originality and ability to evolve in my niche are what set me apart; more importantly, it helps that I have always loved acting and content creation, so this was always something I was going to do.”
With the entertainment industry globally impacted negatively by the coronavirus pandemic, social media has become a haven for many comedians. For someone in the funny business, he didn’t have a funny view of the coronavirus. “It’s a deadly virus that has affected the whole world,” he says solemnly. “But I’m certainly hopeful for a cure, and I think everyone needs to listen to the health practitioners and stay home to be safe.”
The Covid-19 disruption, nonetheless, the 23-year-old, is still optimistic about achieving his set goals for the year. “I’m currently on the set of series,” he says and further affirms, “I plan to act more movies and produce more original contents.”
