Nigerians Can Perform Better Than Western Golfers – Obadofin

August 16, 2020

Nigeria’s Professional golfer, Donatus Obadofin has stated that the country’s golfers can perform better than their western counterparts in international tournaments.

Obadofin while speaking to LEADERSHIP sports debunked reports that Nigerian golfers cannot compete against the highly rated golfers in the world, adding that if Nigerian golfers are armed with the required facilities and support as their western counterparts they can deliver at the world’s biggest stage.

“We can compete very well with the western professional, we professionals in Nigeria are natural born talents playing more in a difficult condition than the western professional, they are playing in  very luscious golf courses that are well built and not as long as we have in Nigeria, so you can imagine when someone is playing in bush area and then you now give him an opportunity to play on a very luscious golf course ” he argued.

“So it not true that the African professional can not compete against the western professional, we can compete with them any day and time”.

“The problem lies in the fact that there are no facilities for us to pickup our game in the way we can live up to the standard of those who are playing in western world”.

The Edo state born golfer also stated the need why stakeholders of the game should revamp the sector so as to bring it at par to what is obtainable in the western world.

“The golf sector in Nigeria is way backward, we need to improve and step up our game. We have some beautiful players who can deliver at the world biggest stage, what we need is to get sponsors who will come and invest in players.  We should also have quality tournaments and the appropriate facilities for the golfers, with all these properly put in place I can assure that Nigeria’s professional can deliver a world class performance”.

“We want all stakeholders to change the fortunes of the game because it’s a big sector that can generate huge financial gains which is capable of boosting the country’s economy.

According to the Abuja based golfer “So many people in this country  prefer to sponsor those who are outside than Nigerians, how do we compete with those people who are called superhuman because they give them all what they need to succeed, the players just go to the field and deliver”.

“So if you give me everything I need to succeed, I will deliver at any biggest stage”.

He however revealed the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the professional golfers and workers at the golf courses

“It has been a very difficult time for the professional golfers, the caddies and other people working in the golf courses, because the Covid-19 hit us unaware, we just hope that things return back to normalcy” he concluded.
