Recently news filtered in that Nigerian popular Preacher based in Port Harcourt the Rivers state capital Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere the Founder and General Overseer of the Omega Power Ministries OPM will be sending 65 students to Turkey on a free scholarship programme.
This scholarship covers tuition fees, personal upkeep as well as other goodies. This set of students who were recently in Abuja the Federal Capital, will be joining over forty others that went for the programme earlier this year bringing the total number to over a hundred beneficiaries.
I recently visited the OPM regional headquarters where these students stayed while awaiting issuance of their visas and I must confess that seeing the excitement of these students first hand gave me joy in my heart which I want to share in this column so Nigerians will keep hearing of the good works of this kind hearted Preacher who has taken evangelism to another dimension; changing lives of people and making them not only useful to the society but candidates for heaven.
As I continue to praise God for giving Nigeria this gift to humanity, I wish to use this medium to call on other men of God to at least emulate this kind of spirit of using offerings and tithes to invest on the lives of their members.
It is inhuman and insensitive that clergies in the country do not care for the progress of their members. It is not a hidden thing that many churches run schools that are too exorbitant and out of the reach of their members. I am not just talking about the poor members but the middle income members find it difficult to take their children to such expensive schools which only the rich can attend.
I nearly wept when I personally met some kids at the OPM regional headquarters particularly the story of one of the girls Miss Redemption Pepple touched my heart and as a mother, I could not hold back my tears of joy on the kind of redemption which God has used Apostle Chinyere to perform on the life of this young girl.
Miss Redemption was highly reported in the news to have been isolated by her parents from the entire world. Her weird parents later died in the course of a marathon fasting which they were engaged in leaving Miss Redemption aged 18 with her 12 year old younger sister living with the corpse for days before being rescued by neighbours. After the burial of the parents, Apostle Chinyere was later approached to help the kids.
As a loving person he is, he took them in to add with over a hundred kids that reside with him. The good news today is that the girl who was isolated from the world is today on her way to receive international education. Her case is not just the only case.
Most of the beneficiaries of this free foreign scholarship are kids from poor homes, some of them are ex sex workers, some are orphans etc. the thing that binds these kids is that there wouldn’t have been hope for them if God had not intervened in their lives through the goodness of the Omega Power Ministries OPM which also runs 16 free schools in the country amongst other schemes.
When I say these schools are free, I don’t mean it in the sense of Nigerian freebies. These are every qualitative schools that meet the standards of the expensive schools run by our clergies.
My problem is that if Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere can run these schools for free, please why can’t our Pastors do same? I know everybody has their callings but cant giving back to those in need which unfortunately forms the bulk of these churches be part of such calling?
I am not trying to make comparisons here but it is important that we say the truth no matter whose ox is gored.
