Water has become my new fancy! Ana m agbazi onwe mu mmiri everyday (I stuff myself with water every day). Fela may have done the same thing when he sang his Water e no get enemy sound track. I hear it has health benefits and I might already have started benefiting from my latest water therapy campaign. I have always heard of water therapy with folks mentioning they take a bottle of water early in the morning. I never bordered myself with the gist until this COVID19 period. I cannot say what started it but it happened and I now make extra effort to drink more water with every meal, gulping at least 75 ml in each of those. I read we need up to 2 litres a day. It comes with its own challenge as most times am already full and may not have space to put the water. At such times, it feels like a real drug with the entire struggle to get it down the throat. So now I have to be mindful of the quantity of food I take in to have space for water.
The challenges are not only about space to store but also the discharge frequency that comes with it. I read a normal person should urinate about 6 to 7 times a day. With more water intake comes the urge to urinate more but the benefits I believe outweigh the inconvenience. Do not trivialize this small inconvenience as it can be really annoying especially when you go to bed whether in the afternoon or in the night. The good side might be that it helps you keep watch in the night! But if you are the type that weewee on the bed, don’t say I asked you to turn on the tap on yourself especially if you are a kid. I have heard mums shouting on their kids do not drink much water in the night so you don’t weewee on the bed. Please follow your mum’s instruction in this case if you are in this category. Only consume and meet your target during the day.
Drinking lots of water keeps us hydrated and I assume a lot of good comes with it. I think part of my reason for dappling into this water drinking business was my observation of my urine always being yellow or orange while I always desired them colourless. This is after discounting health conditions that can lead to such colouration and increased frequency in urination. And most times it was because of my none- consumption of enough water. So the more I drink water I challenge myself to ensure my urine is always colourless. Sometimes it’s a struggle but I carry on though. With working from home I have limitless amount of water at my disposal which is one of the good things with working from home.
Meanwhile we must note that while drinking plenty of water is good, drinking plenty of good water is even best. With the proliferation of sachet and bottled water one needs to be sure of the source of that water. We have read and heard stories of packaging of these items in unwholesome environments. Unfortunately the high brand ones come at an extra ordinarily high cost not everyone can afford them. In those instances families have an option to treat their own water. At a minimum they need to boil and filter the water to remove bacteria and disease causing organisms. There are also simple tests that can be done to check the Ph of the water. Presence of heavy metals can be confirmed from more sophisticated tests but everyone cannot afford that one so best to keep to the minimum of heating and filtering. Even the heating comes with a cost as you have to spend on kerosene, gas or electricity bill to make that happen. But you have to weigh the options; spend on heating the water and preventing germs or spending time in the hospitals with the children or yourself and suffer the downtime associated with hospital visit.
While drinking clean water is great, having access to clean water is greater. This is part of the millennium development goals I am sure. However access to clean drinking water is a tall order in our society today. Recently I have read Charles Ogbu’s of Elomah.com lament about the abandoned greater Onitsha water scheme with allegation of the selling of the land in GRA meant for the scheme. Similar story abounds in all the other states of the federation and one wonders about the good old days home builders can simply connect to the public water scheme. I remember my dad telling the story of how such connections must be made at the top of the public water pipes that criss-cross the whole city so that the pressure does not go down prematurely before it gets to the houses downstream. Even of more interest is what I recently read about how much investment Israel had to make to pipe water from its northern part of their country to the southern part to enable development of those regions. Something we take for granted here.
Anyway whatever source of water you have, make sure it is clean and continue drinking your way to good health and colourless urine!
Friday 14th August 2020, my dad’s birthday! Happy birthday dad!
