The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) has disassociated itself from the convicted University of Lagos (UNILAG) rapist, John Osagie Otema, saying that the convict is neither a registered nor certified quantity surveyor based on available records.
This was contained in a rebuttal, titled, “UNILAG Alumnus Jailed 50 Years for Raping Student on Campus”, a copy of which was made available to LEADERSHIP by NIQS in Abuja yesterday.
Recall that last week, a surveyor, John Otema was convicted and sentenced to 50 years imprisonment for raping a 19-year-old student of UNILAG.
Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court handed down the judgement to the convict.
The trial judge found the convict guilty of a two-count charge of rape and assault of the 19-year-old student brought against him by the state government.
Reacting to the story that was published on some national dailies, including online, the President of NIQS, QS Mohammed Abba Tor said that, “Available record shows that Mr. Otema was at no time either trained or certified by the Institute to practice the profession of quantity surveying in Nigeria”.
He pointed out that the institute would never harbour or shield any of its members involved in criminal activities, emphasising that NIQS is a responsible body run by a strict code of ethics.
According to him, “Its necessary to inform the public that as a professional body saddled with the responsibility of training, regulating and continuously enhancing ethical standards and technical competence of quantity surveying practice in Nigeria, we can say without any fear of equivocation that the convict, Mr. Otema is not a quantity surveyor”.
