Governor of Delta State, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, has directed the Commissioner of Finance and the State Accountant General to end pay cuts of civil servants of grade level 07 and above.
The governor’s directive also brought smile to the faces of political appointees as cuts in their salaries were restored, all in a bid to cushion the perceived economic hardship on Nigerians occasioned by the hike in electricity tariff from N22 to N67, and pump price of petrol from N145 to N160 in multiple increments within the last three months.
Secretary to Delta State Government, Barrister Chiedu Ebie, who conveyed the order to the two senior government officials said the governor’s directive takes effect from September salaries of workers affected by the pay cuts.
“The State Government commends the understanding exhibited by the Organized Labour and the affected personnel.
“As we await the full reflation of the country’s economy, Deltans and other residents are implored to continue to lend support to Government’s efforts at confronting the current economic challenge,” he said.
It will be recalled that the state government had to cult salaries of certain cadre of civil servants and political appointees due to dwindling prices at the international market, which subsequently affected budget benchmark of both federal and state governments.
The gesture of the governor has been interpreted by workers in the state to mean swift and genuine efforts of a responsive government to the socioeconomic plight of the people at a critical period such as this, wherein Covid-19 pandemic wrecked havoc on global economy.
