The minister of Youth and Sports development, Sunday Dare, has insisted that no club would be allowed to play in the 2020/21 Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) season if it does not meet the N200million benchmark set by the League Management Company (LMC).

The sports minister made the assertion yesterday in Abuja while briefing newsmen. Dare noted that the government has agreed to change sports from recreational activities to a business venture, adding that, the country’s domestic clubs must play their role to meet international best standards.

He further noted that the money would help the players and officials in regards to welfare, medical condition while noting that it will add value to the NPFL and also attract investors.

“Our domestic league must run as a business and to do that it must have regulations and financial control and for us to enforce them,” he said.

“So clubs must have a minimum of N200million in their account to ensure that, they can take care of their players as regards welfare, medicals and to meet other conditions,”.

“All clubs must meet the necessary conditions if they want to play in the league and if they don’t meet them they will not play”.

Dare also said that the league would go on if only seven or eight clubs meet the requirements.

“We are ready to go with seven or eight clubs and as club meets with the conditions they can join because what it does is, it put a value on our players, it attracts private investors, investment and also brings sponsors for the league. And this time we will ensure that it makes it possible for everyone” he concluded.
