A member of the House of Representatives, Honourable Teejay Yusuf has called on European Union (EU), United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other developed nations to consider emulating US visa ban policy on perpetrators of electoral violence.
In a statement issued in Abuja yesterday, Hon Yusuf who represents Kabba – Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency in Kogi state decried the rise in inconclusive elections.
Yusuf, however, commended the United States for imposing visa restrictions on some individuals who are responsible for rigging during the Kogi and Bayelsa governorship elections in Nigeria.
The lawmaker stressed that this would tame political leaders who are penchant for foreign trips and further reassure Nigerian democrats.
He also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure that there is no inclusive election in Saturday’s governorship election in Edo state.
The statement said: “We shall continue to commend the USA for wielding the big stick against those who played inglorious, despicable roles in the violent rape of democracy during Kogi state’s last governorship elections; replication of such visa ban by the EU, UAE, and other developed countries will tame political leaders’ who are penchant for foreign trips and further reassure Nigerian democrats.
“PDP members are joining Edo State people and all true democrats across Nigeria to call upon the United States, the EU, UAE, and all other countries to insist that there are not inconclusive elections.
“All through the PDP years from May 1999 to May 2015, only one inconclusive election was recorded in the country.”
