NCAC Opens New Chapter On Morality, Social Values

September 27, 2020

With conscious efforts, the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC) is selling and putting in good shape the Nigerian culture, morality and  social values, not only to the outside world but within Nigeria. At a recent roundtable on social values, it opened a new chapter with admirable attributes such as hope, sense of duty, acceptable standards of right and wrong, orderly and harmonious society among others.

The director-general, NCAC, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, during the opening remarks stated that whatever the reasons for the high rate of immorality and moral decadence, it cannot be denied that it poses a palpable threat to the peace, social cohesion, mutual trust and respect being the core values on which the very fabric of our society was built.

Runsewe said, “I have no doubt in my mind that this forum provides a veritable platform, to collectively direct our productive efforts towards using cultural values and norms in proffering more practical solutions in dealing with current national challenges of insecurity, poverty, moral decadence, unemployment and youth restiveness.”

The event which held at the Sheraton Hotels and Towers Abuja, had a book presentation titled “Morality, Culture and the Nigerian Youth”. The chairman of the occasion, who is the senior special assistant to the President on Women Affairs & Administration (Office of the First Lady), Dr Hajo Sani declared the event open.

According to Dr Hajo Sani the Nigerian youth while imitating foreign cultures in the way they talk and dress, are early signs of deviation from our moral values and customs. Lamenting that in schools, many teachers who are supposed to tutor our children in cultural ethos now take advantage of the same children they are supposed to take care of. Adding that the society at large, has now become bad examples to our youth by exposing them to other immoral vices like rape and other forms of evil activities.

She noted that the First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari will be willing to collaborate with NCAC on building a good foundation for our youth right from childhood.

Dr Sani said, “Morality is what is taking our youth astray, for this reason this conference is the key entry. We look forward to when this same event will be taken down to the grassroots, schools and institutions. We need to revival what we used to have in those day while growing up. We need to teach our youths the right messages and core values. Our cultural values that use to bind us together as family has been borrowed by foreign values in to our homes.”

Similarly, The managing director, African Independence Television (AIT), Dr (Mrs) Tosin Dokpesi, who gave the keynote address, commended the DG, NCAC for putting up the roundtable discourse, adding that there is no better time to start the moral rebirth crusade than now. She said all hands must be on deck to rid the society of the social vices and inculcate good values in our youths. She stressed the need to arrest our eroding values and tradition with a commitment to restore the lost culture and glory of our country Nigeria.

“Let our youth believe in themselves by been true Nigerians and upholding our culture with great dignity.”

The two-day programme which had dignitaries from both the government and relevant stakeholders also dealt on raising voices against the culture of rape. Pick a copy of Leadership Sunday as we continue next week.
