NLC Strike

Mixed reactions have trailed the suspension of the proposed strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) after a marathon negotiation meeting that continued into the early hours of Monday.

The Organized Labour had threatened to embark on a nationwide strike over the hike in petrol price and electricity tariff.

While many hailed the Federal Government for averting the industrial action, others however slammed labour for suspending the strike, even when its demands were not met. They also wondered whose interest the Organized Labour was agitating for, referring to the ‘compromise’ as self seeking.

End ASUU Strike

Federal Government’s successful negotiation with the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress seemed to have renewed calls for an end to the lingering strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Those who trended the hashtag on social media chided the Federal Government for not prioritizing education, but hastily going into negotiation with the Organized Labour to avert strike.

They argued that development in Nigeria would continue to be a mirage until education assumed the driver seat, adding that no nation has ever advanced beyond the level of its education.

The former Anambra State Governor has been appearing repeatedly on social media trends, as underground politicking ahead of 2023 gradually takes shape.

Posters of Obi/Kwankwaso for 2023 presidency had been making rounds on social media with commensurate reactions from those who think that a president from the South East would be the way to go, come 2023.

Some Nigerians who also lended their views to the Obi presidency, opined that competency was more important now that the country was in dire need of a consummate technocrat to pull it out of the doldrums. They added that it doesn’t matter where a candidate comes from.

Electronic Voting

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been commended for advancing processes for the implementation of electronic voting in the country.

According to Channels Television, the Commission on Monday held a demonstration for the use of electronic voting at its headquarters in Abuja.

While welcoming the move as a step towards consolidating Nigeria’s democracy, a cross section of Nigerians on social media, however, expressed concern over the security of the model, particularly as it has to do with hacking.

They also submitted that electronic voting would make no difference if the integrity of those in charge of the system was questionable.
