The Chairman Senate Committee on Navy, Senator George Sekibo has described the return of the Petroleum Industry Bill by President Muhammadu Buhari for passage by the Senate as a rare opportunity for Nigeria to get things right in the oil and gas sector.
Commending President Buhari for submission of the PIB to the National Assembly for further legislative action, Senator Sekibo recalled that it was first introduced to the 6th Assembly in 2008.
Sekibo, assured the people of the Niger Delta that he will be their voice and rallying point to ensure justice is done to them.
He announced that he will be convening a hybrid town hall meeting with the components of physical and virtual participation on the 9th of October 2020 to harness all the critical views of the region which he promised to canvass on the floor of the Senate.
Sekibo said: “The stakeholders were not able to reach a compromise and that attempt did not see the light of day,” he lamented.
The Senator said even the attempt to break it up to different aspects with the passage of the governance aspect of the bill became statute barred as the 8th Assembly had elapsed.
“So this indeed is a rare opportunity to set things right for the Nation and the Oil and Gas sector,” Sekibo said.
