Dangote Trailer, 64 Others Among Anti Smuggling Seizures ~ Customs

A Dangote Trailer conveying 30 bags of smuggled foreign parboiled rice has been reported as part of 65 seizure made by Sector 3 of the Joint Border Operations Drill, JBOD, of the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, during a 53 day special operations against contraband, elombah.com has been told.

This was disclosed in Ilorin, headquarters of the NCS zonal command, to the surprise of select media men at a briefing by the coordinator of JBOD, Olugboyega Peter, a Comptroller of NCS.

Dangote, a big industry in hurlage, cement and beverages is believed to be a government pampered business concern which was recently exempted from ban on land borders by federal government.

But the trailer was caught along Kotangora road, Niger State, by eagle eyed operatives of JBOD comprising army, DSS, Airforce, Immigration and controlled by the office of the National Security Adviser, NSA.

The Customs helmsman says that the operation caps his near one month resumption of duty in the zonal command of JBOD.

With headquarters in Ilorin, Kwara State and comprising four north central states of Kogi, Niger, Benue and Kwara, the customs comptroller says that the latest hurl comes from its operation code named ‘Exercise Swift Response’.

Giving a breakdown of the siezures made in the operation, Olugboyega said that four single barrel rifle was seized, apart from the Dangote truck and with it, the suspected gun runner has been sent to the appropriate security agency for handling.

Also, 1,643 bags of foreign parboiled rice, approximately three trailer loads were intercepted; so were 373 Jerry cans of pms of 25 liters each, 12 Jerry cans of AGO, 32 used vehicles, four bails of second hand clothing and one motorcycle.

The comptroller further explained that the entire hurl comes to a total of N53.1 million in duty paid value, DPV.
The Comptroller further appealed to the public to be more patriotic in the fight against smuggling.

“We will continue to appeal to the patriotic spirit of all Nigerians, especially members of the business communities to see the exercise as an opportunity to further create a conducive environment for local businesses to thrive in the overall interest of national security, well being of the citizen and economic development,” Olugboyega appealed.
