A source close to Senator Ali Ndume has revealed to ElombahNews how greed and evil plot landed him in Kuje prison and not necessarily the absence of Abdulrasheed Maina, who jumped bail almost five months ago.
The source who claimed to be in the know of the whole imbroglio said that it was Senator Ndume’s plan to outwit Maina and the Court landed him in jail.
He (the source), meanwhile revealed that Maina had left Nigeria and won’t be returning for a very long time while the case against him lasts.
The source explained that Ndume was smart enough and demanded and obtained from Maina the N500 million required as part of the bail conditions before he stood surety for him.
According to him, Ndume knew Maina would escape so he got the money from him ahead of the rainy day
However, he added that Ndume just wanted to keep the 500 million Naira and not pay it banking on his self-recognition as a senator to intimidate the court if and when the need arises.
He affirmed: “Now let me tell you something else I know. Ndume demanded and obtained from Maina, the 500 million before he signed for Maina.
“He knew Maina would escape so he got the money from him. Ndume just wants to keep the 500 million and not pay it.”
However, things went awry when the presiding judge, Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja, ordered his detention in Kuje Prison pending when he will produce the former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reformed Task Team.
However, the source noted that the whole ploy by Ndume is a deliberate one, including his remand in prison facility to enable him swallow the N500 million whole.
He said: “Yeah! Ndume is sitting on Mainas N500 million. He wants to fight his detention and if he wins and goes the way of Araribe, he can keep the money.
“And he will soon be released. There is already pressure for him to be treated the same way as Araribe.”
Confirming the whereabouts of the senator, he said: “Ndume is now in prison. He prayed in the [prison] mosque yesterday evening.”
Recall that ElombahNews reported on Monday that Justice Abang ordered that the Senator be remanded in prison facility over his inability to produce the runaway former defunct Pension Reformed Chairman.
Maina is facing charges on a N2 billion money laundering allegation.
The presiding judge ordered that Ndume will not be released from prison until he either produces Maina in court or sells off his property.
The property, located in Asokoro, Abuja, is reportedly worth N500 million.
Maina, on the other hand, jumped bail after Ndume stood as his surety to enable the court to grant him bail.
As part of the bail condition, Ndume presented the N500 million Asokoro property which was used as the guarantee for the bail bond.
The judge ordered that he be remanded in Kuje prison pending when he meets the condition for his release.
In a bench ruling, the judge ordered the federal government to sell Senator Ndume’s property to recover the N500 million bond.
In a related development, the Court on Tuesday commenced the trial of Maina in his absence.
He is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on the N2 billion money laundering allegation.
Maina last attended court on July 2, 2020, during the cross-examination of the sixth prosecution witness by his legal team.
