In keeping in line with her passion for an improved and quality health management for persons living with sickle cell disease, the National Coordinator of the Association of People Living with Sickle Cell Disorder, Mrs Aisha Edward Maduagwu, has described as fruitful and effective, the association’s November 26 medical interactive session where a group of medical professionals from Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi, came to the Sickle Cell Home Agulu.

Leading the team of health experts was a professor of medicine at NAUTH Nnewi, Prof. Charles Odenigbo, with an array of chemical pathologists, hematologists, pediatricians, physiologists, medical laboratory scientists, etc. The team conducted free intensive kidney tests on all members who gathered in their large numbers to benefit from the plan for an improved healthcare.

Prof. Odenigbo while briefing newsmen after the exercise, said that his team was at the Sickle Cell Home Agulu at the behest of H3 Africa Foundation, a United State Government sponsored project to determine the cause of diseases in Africa.

The consortium facilitates fundamental research into diseases on the African continent with views to support a sustainable African research enterprise.

The research is based on non communicable diseases like sickle cell, heart and renal diseases, and communicable diseases like tuberculosis etc.

Prof Charles Odenigbo said the medical data collected would be forwarded to scientists working round the clock on research programs. He thanked the national coordinator of the association for her giant stride in sickle cell eradication and advocacy, as well as drawing attentions to the ugly plights of persons living with sickle cell disease. He further expressed his elation upon such a wonderful platform for academic and research purposes.

Also visiting the sickle cell home was a stakeholder in Agulu community, Chief Emma Ibeneme, who said he was moved to compassion upon hearing how some orphaned sicklers could not attend school due to poverty. Chief Ibeneme has earlier donated money that has seen master Peter Chidubem, a twelve years old sickle cell boy from Agulu and living in the home return joyfully back to school. Other important visitors present was the representative from Bond Chemical Industries, makers of Oxyurea capsules, an efficient medication in the treatment of sickle cell crisis.

Newsmen from reputable media houses also thronged the Sickle Cell Home Agulu to get first hand reaction from the National Coordinator, about the Injustices and discriminations meted on the association, especially the recent exclusion and denial of a representative in the sickle cell monitoring committee, an action which contravenes section 10 subsection 4 of the Sickle Cell Disease (Control and Eradication) Law, 2019.

The monthly medical Interactive session is part of a health initiative by the association and an avenue to bring sickle cell patients and their caregivers together in a serene atmosphere, where vital health challenges are discussed, free drugs and other welfare packages distributed.
