The Police have rescued the Auxiliary Bishop of Owerri Archdiocese, Moses Chikwe, who was abducted in Owerri, the Imo State capital on Christmas Day.
This was confirmed by the spokesman of Imo State Police Command, Orlando Ikeokwu.
Ikeokwu, who disclosed this on Friday, claimed that the Bishop was rescued without the payment of ransom to his abductors.
Further, he stated that the rescue is the result of a sting operation by men of the Imo State Police Command.
The Catholic clergyman was abducted on Sunday night, along with his driver, at the World Bank area of Owerri.
Equally important, the Catholic community and the Christian Association of Nigeria had been united in calling for the release of the kidnapped priest.
Also, on Thursday, women under the aegis of the Owerri Archdiocesan Catholic Women organization had also protested; calling on the state government and security operatives to help secure the Bishop’s release.
Some sections of the online media had reported that the cleric had been killed by his abductors.
Specifically, the reports claimed the corpse of the prelate was allegedly found somewhere at the Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of the state; causing panic in the state. However, the Archbishop of the Catholic archdiocese in a statement swiftly issued by Rev. Fr. Nnaemeka Njezi; who is the assistant secretary of the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri, stated that there was no truth in the death rumour.
