Governors of the South West zone have banned all forms of open grazing in the region.

The resolution was reached on Monday following the meeting held by the governors with Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) leadership and security chiefs.

The meeting was a fall-out of the order by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State to cattle herders to vacate the state’s forest reserves.

Governor Akeredolu had on January 18, 2021 ordered herdsmen to leave the state’s forest reserves within seven days following incidents of killings and kidnapping by Fulani herders.

Addressing newsmen after the meeting, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State said:

“Today, the South West governors held a security stakeholders’ meeting in Ondo State.

“The meeting was attended by our brother governors from Kebbi and Jigawa States, security chiefs, South West zone led by the AIG Zone 11 and leaders from the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria.

“Collectively, we resolved to ban open grazing in all parts of the South-West.

“In Oyo State, we already have a law against open grazing which will continue to be implemented by our security agencies.

“I restated that we will not permit criminality as a response to criminal actions. Instead we will continue to support our security agencies to do their duties.

“Also, we will work with our people to face our common enemies – the criminals; kidnappers, armed robbers and bandits.”

The governors in attendance at the meeting are Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Mohammed Abubakar of Jigawa State, and Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi State.

The South West governors and the MACBAN leadership had met to chat a new course to avert insecurity in the region.

According to sources, the Presidency directed the Cattle Breeders to hold the meeting with the governors of the region.

The Ondo Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Donald Ojogo said meetings like that were not unusual.

He said: “Well, meetings of that nature, if true, are not unusual. We are all in it together. No ethnic group or a particular trade is the target of the government order.

“So it will be a welcome development if the meeting is holding. There is nothing too unusual about it,” he said.
