Arteta Opens Up On Arsenal’s Interest In Stones
Mikel Arteta has revealed Arsenal’s position over speculations that they are interested in Manchester City defender John Stones.
Arsenal have been linked with a move for a central defender with Stones reported to be one of their targets.
Calum Chambers is a long-term absentee while the duo of Sokratis Papasthathopoulos and David Luiz have not been convincing.
But when questioned if Stones will join Arsenal in the current transfer window, Arteta said it is not true.
“No, no truth at all,” he revealed in Wednesday’s pre-match press conference ahead of Arsenal’s home clash against Sheffield United on Saturday.
“John is a player that I really like and I followed. We signed him when I was at Manchester City and I worked with him for many years and know him well.
“When I look at centre backs he has many attributes that I like from one, but we’re not interested,” Arteta stated.
However, Arteta revealed he is not ruling out the possibility of a new signing in the winter transfer window.
“We have a lot of issues at the back,” Arteta said. “The fact that Calum got the big injury is modifying our plans. We have to live with it, this is what we have.
“I’m happy we have the squad that I believe we can compete for what we want, but if this scenario changes and we need somebody, I’m expecting that we will go into the market and try to solve the issue.”
