Solskjaer : Man United ‘ll Not Suffer 30-Year  EPL Title Drought Like Liverpool

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists that Manchester United will not go 30 years like Liverpool before they will win the Premier League title again.

Liverpool are about to land their first league title since 1990 as they top the log on 61 points, 14 points ahead of second placed Manchester City, with a game in-hand.

For United, they are about to go seven years without a league title and there are fears that they could endure a similar drought to Liverpool.

But Solskjaer has played down such thoughts but stated they have to learn from Liverpool’s experience.

“That’s what we’re working hard to make sure doesn’t happen and let that be a lesson for us,” Solskjaer said ahead of this weekend’s trip to Anfield.

“They’ve been close a few times and we can’t let ourselves go another 24 years without winning the league – I’m sure we won’t. Will take a little bit of time but we’ll get there.”

Solskjaer believes United need a performance like their famous Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain last season or last month’s victory over Manchester City to inflict Liverpool’s first league defeat of the season.

They came within a few minutes of doing so at Old Trafford in October but Adam Lallana scored a late equaliser.

“We need a very very good performance to go there and win but we beat City last month and had the PSG game,” added Solskjaer.

“We need to get to the level of those performances when you go away to the team that’s top of the league.

“The last two performances at Old Trafford we’ve drawn twice and been close to winning both games, so we’ve got some games to look back at. That will give us loads of belief and if we perform to our best we have a chance to win.”

Jurgen Klopp has complained after those two games that United ‘just defend’ but Solskjaer was not worried by his rival’s comments ahead of Sunday’s clash.

“I don’t think it’s an accusation,” he said. “I take it as a compliment we’ve defended so well. When the opposition manager is frustrated that’s a good sign our boys have done well.

“I think we’ve been closest to winning both games so I don’t know what the problem has been.”

Speaking further, the Norwegian coach said he is expecting a typically hot reception at Anfield.

He insisted there are no concerns over security despite the attack on Manchester City’s team bus before a Champions League game on Merseyside in April 2018.

“No safety fears, no,” said Solskjaer. “Of course they want to try to intimidate us but as long as it’s within the boundaries… I’ve been sat on a bus going to Europe or Anfield and whatever they shout and scream that’s just part and parcel of these games.

“I’ve had both wins and defeats there as a player so you’ve got to look forward to these games. It’s a great challenge for our players to play against the leaders of the league. We’ve done well the last couple of times but away at Anfield is another matter. You can make sure you enjoy it but it can also be an intimidating place. You’ve got to prepare as well as we can because some young players are playing at Anfield for the first time.”
