Tension has taken over the once safest state in Nigeria, Anambra State, following the blocking of all roads leading to the state – including Onitsha Head Bridge – by stern-looking soldiers.
This came on the heels of five soldiers that were allegedly killed by gunmen on Friday night.
It was learnt that the gunmen in an SUV car attacked a military checkpoint at Ihiala along Onitsha-Owerri road on Friday night and also destroyed the operational Hilux vehicle parked at the checkpoint.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, said: “It happened at about 8.40 pm on Friday.”
He however could not give detail of the number of casualties, saying that he was yet to receive detailed report.
The blockade affected travellers coming in or travelling out of the state.
One of those affected, Mr. Emma Ezennia, who was on his way to Abuja from Awka, said that their vehicle could not pass through the Niger Bridge as the soldiers blocked it early in the morning, making it impossible for vehicles to enter the state from Asaba, Delta State.
The same scenario played out at the Amansea border town between Anambra and Enugu states, as the soldiers manning a checkpoint there caused traffic gridlock in the area.
