•Obi with worshippers at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Karu, Abuja . . . on SUnday
Vice Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2019 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, was on Sunday mobbed by worshippers at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Karu, Abuja, where he had gone to felicitate with the Parish Priest, Rev Fr Uche Umechikelu, who was celebrating his 25th Priestly Ordination Anniversary.
Obi had sneaked into the magnificent church – easily the biggest Catholic Church in Abuja Archdiocese – for the mass that had the emeritus Archbishop, Cardinal John Oneyekan, Auxillary Bishop, Rev Dr Anselm Umoren, and over two dozen priests ministering and sat with the worshippers.
He refused the Church Warden’s entreaties to move to the front roll, saying that seats should not be reserved in the church as it is not a social or political gathering.
As Obi sat with the worshippers they continued wondering who he was until he was recognised as one of the worshippers and the church roared: “Okwute!” “Okwute!”
During the picture-taking session inside the church with the bishops, priests and the celebrant, Obi was summoned to join them and that was when more worshippers saw him and roared his name and ‘Okwute’ traditional chieftaincy title again.
Soon after the mass, everybody, priests and worshipers wanted to talk to Obi, all wishing him well and praying for him to lead Nigeria one day.
Everybody, women, youths and children wanted a selfie with him. One woman insisted that Obi take photographs with the little daughter – which he obliged and had to carry the girl during the photo session.
Another woman after identifying Obi held him for over ten minutes, pouring out prayers for him to have the opportunity to rule Nigeria and turn it around for good.
As priests after priests prayed for him Obi told them to also pray for all Nigerian politicians to understand the situation and move in the right direction.
The celebrant, Rev Fr Umechikelu, a priest of the Missionary Society of St Paul (MSP), thanked Obi for gracing the ceremony and prayed for God’s mercy and grace in his life to continue his good works in the society.
