Hundreds of protesters of Northern extraction, on Tuesday, took to the streets of Sapele in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State to protest the killing of one of their kinsmen, Moses Ishaku by a local vigilante.
The 25-year-old tailor was allegedly killed on Monday night after he ran into the vigilante men who mounted a roadblock at the Olympia area of the town in Sapele.
According to a statement made available to newsmen, Ishaku was said to have gone to see a friend along Abeke road on a motorcycle belonging to his friend.
The deceased while returning home, at about 11 p.m, ran into the vigilante men who had mounted a roadblock at the Olympia area of the town.
“On seeing the vigilante men, he tried to flee but one of the vigilante men allegedly hit his head with a plank of wood, he fell and died instantly.
The Vigilantes, numbering about five, were alleged to have carried the corpse inside a Keke and drove off towards the new road area of the town in an attempt to dump his corpse, and later took the corpse to the central hospital.
The protesters wielding woods, cudgel, leaves and brooms took to the streets of Sapele town as early as 8 a.m.
However, the Sapele Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Harrison Nwabuisi was said to have appealed to the aggrieved youths and assured them the police will ensure justice is done.
However, there was a report that the police has arrested the local vigilante who allegedly committed the crime.
Though the Delta State Police Spokesman, Edafe Bright could not be reached as at the time of this report, a security source, who craved anonymity, confirmed the arrest. (Courtesy, Daily Independent)
