Facts have emerged regarding the arrest of the first suspect in Wednesday evening’s failed assassination attempt on former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo, during a youth meeting held at his hometown, Isuofia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.
This is even as the Anambra State Police Command announced the arrest of another four suspects in the attack, which claimed the lives of three of Soludo’s police orderlies. The command said that the suspects have confessed to participating in the attack that saw the abduction of the State Commissioner for Water and Public Utility, Mr Emeka Ezenwanne
A source who spoke on the condition of anonymity, revealed to News Express that one of the suspects lost his phone during the attack, and it was picked up by police operatives led to the scene by the State Police Commissioner, Monday Kuryas.
He said: “One of the killers forgot his phone at the scene of the attack, and we found it when the CP visited the place. We tracked down the owner and arrested him, and he is helping us with investigation.
“As at the time the CP arrived at the scene of the attack, the men were still moving, one of them was even muttering something, but we could not hear him. They were certified dead at the hospital.”
Meanwhile, the command’s Spokesman, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, on Thursday confirmed the arrest of four other suspects in a statement issued in Awka, the state capital.
Ikenga gave the names of the four suspects as Mbah Victor (30), John Olisakwe (21), Chigozie Omeh (20) and Emmanuel Nnobi (28).
“The suspects confessed to have actively taken part in the attack and subsequent abduction of the Commissioner for Water and Public Utility, Mr Emeka Ezenwanne,” the statement states.
The statement assured that the command has intensified efforts to rescue the commissioner.
“Efforts are still ongoing to apprehend other fleeing accomplices, unravel the circumstances surrounding the incidence and bring the suspects to book,” it said.
The command reaffirmed its commitment toward ensuring the safety of residents of the state.
It further called on the people to assist the command with useful information that would help to tackle crime and criminality in the state.
